Chris, thanks for the book review :)
I have to agree with them that we are rapidly entering a population crisis that is already pushing the earth's environmental resources to the limits and is greatly reducing quality of life in many areas. Quality of life will continue to diminish for more people as the population expands. And it's not just people suffering. Many species of animals have already disappeared and many more are on the verge of extinction because of habitat loss and pollution.
I also prefer voluntary measures to stem the tide, like education and reasoning, over any kind of forced measures. Unfortunately, I'm also afraid that voluntary measures are not going to be enough, though I still would not advocate forced measures. We will just have to face the consequences. The consequences are also likely to reduce population in very unpleasant ways, like war, violence, and famine.
Ultimately the survival of the human species will depend on our ability to move our population to other planets and perhaps other solar systems because the sun will eventually expand and burn the earth to a crisp. If we have not moved elsewhere by then, we will perish and it won't be a pleasant fate. It's also quite likely that before then earth will be hit by one or more large meteors with catastrophic results unless we find ways to divert them.
Life is full of challenges :)
